Bible Story: Noah and the big flood

Value: Be obedient

Noah and the flood

There was a time in the Bible when the people living on earth did not love God or love each other. They did bad things and this made God very sad. So sad, that God decided to flood the whole earth.

God found only one good man, named Noah. Noah loved God and did what was right. One day, God told Noah, “I am going to send a big flood to cover the whole earth. But I will keep you and your family safe. You must build a big boat called an ark.”

Noah listened carefully and built the ark. Everyone thought he was silly and laughed at him, but Noah didn’t mind, because he was being obedient to God.

When the ark was finished, God sent two of every animal to the ark – big ones, small ones, tall ones and short ones! Lions, giraffes, monkeys and birds all went inside the ark. Then, it started to rain. It rained for forty days and forty nights. The whole world was covered in water, but Noah, his family and all the animals were safe inside the ark. They floated on the water until the rain stopped.

After a long time, the water went down. Noah sent out a dove, and it brought back an olive leaf, showing that land was near. Finally, the ark came to rest on a mountain. Noah and the animals came out, and God put a rainbow in the sky as a promise that He would never flood the world again.

(Genesis 6-9)

  1. Opening

Have you ever seen a rainbow in the sky? What did it look like? How did you feel when you saw a rainbow?

Today we will learn from the Bible about a big boat, many animals and a very special rainbow. Let’s read the Bible story.

  1. Discovery

Can you remember the story that you heard yesterday?

Yes, we talked about the big ark that Noah built before God sent a flood over the whole earth. Let’s read the Bible story again.

What is your favourite part of the story?

What animals do you see in the picture? Let’s count them!

  1. Retell

Can you tell me what happened in our story yesterday? (Ask leading questions and guide the child using the picture and story.)

Why did God ask Noah to build the ark?

How do you think Noah was feeling? When do you feel like that?

What do you think would have happened if Noah did not build the ark?

  1. Value

This week we’ve been talking about Noah’s obedience when God asked him to build an ark.

Noah was obedient when God asked him to build an ark. Listening and being obedient to God is very important. Just like Noah, we can listen to our parents, teachers, and God to help us stay safe and do the right things.

Can you think of a time when you did not listen to your parents or teachers? What happened then?

What happens when we are obedient and listen to our parents or teachers?

How can you be obedient to your parents and teachers?

  1. Activity

In our Bible story this week Noah’s obedience to God saved his family and all the animals. Can you be obedient just like Noah and the animals were?

(Let the children pretend to be their favourite animals, “marching” into the ark. As they march, give them directions like “go left, go straight, stop!” Emphasise the importance of listening and following directions, just like Noah did.)
