Theme: Food that helps us grow

Bible Story: The fruit of the Spirit

Value: Follow God’s guidance

The fruit of the Spirit

In the Bible God teaches us that we can be like a tree. A big tree with strong roots that grow near a stream which gives it water every day. And because this tree so healthy, it makes the juiciest, sweetest fruit for everyone to enjoy.

When we love God and spend time with Him, we can be like this special tree. We can spend time with God by listening to His words in the Bible and talking to Him every day. This makes us strong and happy, just like the tree.

When we stay close to God, His Holy Spirit helps us grow fruits like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. It’s not fruit you can see or eat, but others can feel it when you treat them with love and kindness.

God wants us to be like that tree, full of good fruit! Can you show love and joy today? How about a bit of kindness? Let’s grow the fruit of the Spirit together!

(Galatians 5:22-23; Psalms 1:1-3; Jeremiah 17:7-8)

  1. Opening

(Show different fruits and take turns asking what type of fruit it is) What is your favourite fruit? Where do apples and oranges grow?

God wants us to grow fruit, just like those apple and orange trees! Let’s read a Bible story about that.

  1. Discovery

Can you remember the story that you heard yesterday?

Yes, we talked about how we can grow wonderful fruit in our lives when we spend time with God. Let’s read the Bible story again.

What is your favourite part of the story?

How many fruit can you count?

What book do you think the boy is reading?

  1. Retell

Can you tell me what happened in our story yesterday? (Ask leading questions and guide the child using the picture and story.)

Let’s name some of the fruit of the Spirit.

What do you think love looks like?

How do you feel if a friend is kind and patient, giving you a chance to go first?

How can you grow these wonderful fruits in your life?

  1. Value

This week we learned that when we read and listen to the Bible and pray, God starts to show us how to live. We start to follow His guidance. And the more we follow His guidance, the more loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and full of self-control we become. How wonderful it would be to feel like that all the time!

What can you do to grow these wonderful fruits in your life?

How can you share God’s love and kindness with others?

  1. Activity

In our Bible story this week we learned that we can grow wonderful fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives when we spend time with God and follow His guidance. Let’s enjoy some tasty fruit together!

(Have a picnic with different kinds of fruit. As you enjoy the fruit, talk about the different fruit of the Spirit and give examples. Love means giving hugs and helping others, joy is being happy, peace is not fighting with friends, patience is waiting your turn, kindness is sharing toys, goodness is doing what is right, faithfulness is keeping a promise, gentleness is using soft words and self-control is stopping yourself from shouting when you’re upset.)
