Bible Story: Jesus rises from the dead

Value: Trust in God’s promises

Jesus rises from the dead!

God loved us so much that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross so that we can be forgiven for our sins. After Jesus died on the cross, His friends were very sad. They took His body and put it in a tomb. The tomb had a big, heavy stone that was rolled in front of the door, so that nobody could get in or out.

Jesus had told His friends and followers that He was going to die, but promised that He would come back to life. Two days after He died, two friends of Jesus named Mary, went to His tomb. But when they got there, the stone was rolled away and the tomb was empty. And in front of the tomb was an angel!

The angel said, “Don’t be afraid! Jesus is not here. He rose from the dead, just like He said He would.”

What amazing news! Jesus had defeated death and was alive! The women were so excited that they ran to go and tell all their friends. On their way, Jesus Himself appeared in front of them and greeted them. They were so happy to see Him that they bent down and worshipped Him. Then Jesus told them to go and tell all His friends and followers that He was alive.

(Matthew 28:1-10)

(Let the children come up with different hand motions and actions that will help them remember each part of the story. Have them do the actions together as you re-read the story.)
