Theme: My senses: touch

Bible Story: Gideon and the fleece

Value: Follow God’s guidance

Gideon and the fleece

There was a time in the Bible when things didn’t go well with God’s people, the Israelites. Their enemies came and stole all their food and animals. They asked God to help them.

One day, God spoke to an Israelite man named Gideon. He said, “Gideon, you are strong! I want you to lead my people to win over their enemies.” Gideon was surprised and felt small and afraid. “Me? Are you sure, God?” he wondered.

Gideon wanted to be sure he was following God’s guidance. So, he prayed, “God, if you really want me to lead the Israelites, please show me.” That night, Gideon laid a fluffy fleece (a wool blanket) on the ground. He said to God, “If the fleece is wet with dew in the morning but the ground is dry, then I’ll know you want me to lead.”

The next morning, Gideon saw that the fleece was wet, and the ground was dry! He squeezed water out of it – enough to fill a whole bowl! But Gideon asked one more time, “God, please let the fleece be dry and the ground wet.” The next morning, that’s exactly what happened! Gideon knew God was guiding him.

So, Gideon trusted God’s plan and led the people bravely. God helped him, and they won, just as God had promised.

(Judges 6)

  1. Opening

(Show a piece of wool/cotton wool and let the children touch it) Do you know what this is? How does it feel? Did you ever have to make an important decision?

Once, God used a piece of wool like this to help someone with an important decision. Let’s read the Bible story.

  1. Discovery

Can you remember the story that you heard yesterday?

Yes, we talked about how Gideon asked God to help him make an important decision. Let’s read the Bible story again.

What is your favourite part of the story?

What is happening in the picture?

  1. Retell

Can you tell me what happened in our story yesterday? (Ask leading questions and guide the child using the picture and story.)

What did Gideon use to ask God for a sign?

What happened to the fleece the first time?

What about the second time?

How do you think Gideon felt when God answered him?

  1. Value

This week we learned that when we don’t know what to do, we can ask God to help us, just like Gideon did. God loves us and wants us to make good choices. We can follow His guidance by praying, listening to the Holy Spirit and reading the Bible.

Do you need to make an important decision today? Let’s pray and ask God to help and guide you.

  1. Activity

In our Bible story this week we learned that we can ask God to help us make important decisions. God can even use a piece of wool to answer us, like He did with Gideon!

(Hand out a paper plate, glue, cotton wool and markers to each child. Let them paste the cotton wool onto the paper plate and draw dew drops around it, just like the wool fleece in the story.)
