Bible Story: Moses and the 10 special rules

Value: Be obedient

Moses and the 10 special rules

There was a time many years ago when God’s people were living in the desert. They were travelling to a new home that God promised them! One day, they camped by a very big mountain called Mount Sinai.

God told Moses to come up to the top of the mountain to talk with Him. There were dark clouds and thunder on the mountain. It was a very special place, because God was there.

God told Moses that He loved His people and wanted to teach them the best ways to live. So, God gave Moses 10 special rules to help the people love God and love each other. These rules are called the Ten Commandments. Here are some of the rules: Love God the most, be kind to others, listen to your parents, always tell the truth and don’t take things that aren’t yours.

God wrote the Ten Commandments on two big stone tablets. Moses brought the stone tablets down the mountain with him and shared these rules with all of God’s people.

God’s special rules are for us, too! They teach us to love God, live right and be kind to everyone around us.

(Exodus 19:1-20; 24; 31:18)

  1. Opening

(Hold a crayon up) What is this? What do we do with it?

Yes, we can draw with it, but we can also write important things with it.

Today we will learn how God wrote 10 very important rules. Let’s read the Bible story.

  1. Discovery

Can you remember the story that you heard yesterday?

Yes, we talked about how God gave Moses the ten special rules called the Ten Commandments. Let’s read the Bible story again.

What is your favourite part of the story?

What do you see in the picture?

  1. Retell

Can you tell me what happened in our story yesterday? (Ask leading questions and guide the child using the picture and story.)

Who gave the special rules to Moses?

What do the Ten Commandments teach us?

  1. Value

This week we’ve been talking about how God gave us ten special rules that we need to obey. God gave us these rules that show us how to love Him and to love others. Rules are there to keep us safe, help us and teach us to do the right thing. Our parents and teachers also give us rules to obey.

What are some of the rules that God gave us?

Are some of these rules hard for you to obey? Let’s pray and ask God to help you obey them.

  1. Activity

In our Bible story this week God gave us ten special rules that show us how to love Him and to love others. Now, let’s play a game to see if you can obey my commands, just like God wants us to obey His rules.

(Play a simple listening game where the children follow easy commands, like “jump”, “clap”, or “hug a friend”. Explain that we need to listen and obey God’s rules, just like they are doing in the game.)
